Financing from Urban Partnership Bank helped build a new, modern campus in the North Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side for UCAN, a 145-year-old youth social services organization that provides a wide range of important services to young people who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. The seven-acre Drost Harding campus includes the Nichols Center, UCAN’s administrative headquarters, as well as the state-of-the-art Diermeier Therapeutic Youth Home that can accommodate more than 60 youth in care. The property was once a distribution site for Sears, but had been vacant for four decades. The new campus opened in two phases, the most recent of which was July 2016 after two years of construction that created more than 400 temporary jobs.

A culturally proficient organization that embraces diversity as a cornerstone, UCAN committed to – and exceeded – awarding a minimum of 50% of its campus construction and professional contracts to minority- and women-owned businesses.

“Urban Partnership Bank’s $4 million of financing for UCAN’s new campus allowed the project to move forward at a crucial juncture, and the bank personnel were instrumental in getting it done right and on time,” said UCAN CEO Emeritus Thomas Vanden Berk. The Diermeier Therapeutic Youth Home, financed in part by Urban Partnership Bank, has significantly more green space for sports and other activities than our youth’s previous facility, and offers more privacy for residents by providing separate rooms for each child. In addition, the layout of the new dorms allows for better supervision of the residents. The new campus will provide a foundation for UCAN’s operations for at least the next few decades.”
